Gomez Takes First Qualifying Spot
FILIPINO Roberto Gomez clinched his place in the main 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship after he won the first of ten qualifying tournaments.
Gomez (pictured right) defeated Hisash Kusano and Tomoo Takano of Japan before further successes against Hsia Hui-kai (Chinese Taipei), David Renemar (Philippines) and Warren Kiamco (Philippines) saw him make the final where he faced Japanese player Naoyuki Oi. The final was a race to nine and Gomez triumphed with a 9-6 victory to take the position of qualifier one in the main draw.
It was a fantastic achievement for Gomez who will be making his debut in the actual competition, which begins at the Philippine International Convention Center on Saturday, November 4.
Gomez did well to defeat Hsia Hui-kai and Kiamco as both players had reached the last 32 of the main tournament in Kaohsiung in 2005.
After this triumph, Gomez will take his place in group 22 where he will be alongside Corey Deuel (USA), Masaaki Tanaka (Japan) and John Wims (Ireland).
In the second qualifying tournament, Nien Rong-chih of Taiwan also won through to book his place in the main event.
