Morris Slumps To Shock Defeat

AMERICAN Rodney Morris slumped to a stunning shock opening day defeat in the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championships.

Morris, who is the 12th seed, reached the semi-finals of the 2005 competition in Kaohsiung but lost 8-2 to on-form German Joern Kaplan in his first match of this year’s event.

It was a fantastic performance from Kaplan, a player that had never qualified for the tournament before, while Morris will now have to defeat Chile's Enrique Rojas on Sunday to avoid an early elimination.

Morris was not the only seeded player to have problems as tenth seed Francisco Bustamante had trailed against Filipino qualifier Jharome Pena 5-4 but battled back to take a thrilling 8-7 victory.

Elsewhere, reigning champion Wu Chia-ching made a perfect start to the defence of his title with an 8-0 triumph over Sven Pauritsch of Germany, while Chang Jung-ling beat Tony Fransson by the same score.
